Below is a great article about what is takes to be a pro cyclist. It's so much more than results. I always like to say that only 1 person can win a race and there is ofter 20 - 200 people trying to be the person. So if you don't win, and to be honest the odds are against you, sponsors need you to offer something more.
I think many young cyclists haven't gotten this message. Money is scarce out there and it's up to you to give sponsors maximum ROI (Return on Investment).
Social media is the first step, but in my opinion it's just the beginning. Go to more events than just races, be personable, offer a helping hand to new riders every chance you get. You'd be surprised how helping someone change a tube on the trail can benefit you in your career, it's good Karma!
You may not be making a salary, but if someone is sponsoring you with any kind of help, you owe it to them to repay them in some way.
We all benefit from growing the sport, even if it's just in your hometown.
